Irena Finnegan, LLB
Accredited MediatorLegal Executive
I'm Irena, the person behind Concord Mediation.
My professional background is a little varied, and that has shaped the way I work. I'm qualified in both law and Early Childhood Care and Education, and over the years I've had the opportunity to work with people from many different backgrounds and circumstances.
Throughout my legal career, I've worked across a wide range of areas, including medical negligence, personal injury, employment law, family law, criminal law, landlord and tenant litigation, and licensing matters.
Working in both law and childcare has taught me a great deal about people and the different ways we each approach situations.
I've also seen how quickly disagreements can become complicated, especially when emotions, relationships or personal circumstances are involved.
That's one of the things that drew me to mediation.
Having worked in the legal profession, I know that court proceedings sometimes are necessary. But I also know that even when a case is won, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone walks away satisfied.
What I like about mediation is that it offers something different.
Instead of leaving the outcome entirely in someone else's hands, the people involved have an opportunity to sit down, talk through what's really important to them and find a solution that works for both sides.
It doesn't mean everyone will get everything they want, and it certainly doesn't mean every disagreement can be resolved through mediation. But sometimes, with a little willingness to listen and compromise, people can reach an outcome that neither might have thought possible at the beginning.
As a mediator, my role isn't to take sides or tell anyone what they should do. It's to create a respectful, supportive space where people can have those conversations, even when they feel difficult.
That's what I want Concord Mediation to be about: helping people feel heard and understood while giving them the opportunity to find their own way forward.
Listen. Understand. Resolve.
In court, a judge makes a decision based on the law and the evidence presented. That decision may resolve the legal dispute, but it won't necessarily address everything that matters to the people involved.
Mediation takes a different approach.
It gives people the opportunity to have a say in the outcome, consider solutions that might not be available through court proceedings and work towards an agreement they can both accept.
It's not about one person winning and the other losing. It's about seeing whether there's a way forward that works for everyone involved.
Having worked in legal practice across a range of areas, I've seen how disputes can develop and what can happen when they end up in court.
Court proceedings are sometimes necessary, but they can also be lengthy, costly and stressful. And even when a case is won, it doesn't always mean everyone walks away satisfied.
That's one of the reasons I believe in mediation.
My legal background helps me understand the wider context of a dispute, while mediation gives people the opportunity to explore solutions that may not be available through court proceedings.
Although I have a legal background, my role as a mediator is different.
I'm not there to take sides, provide legal advice or tell either party what they should agree to.
My role is to remain impartial, help everyone involved have a constructive conversation and support them in exploring their own solutions.
I encourage parties to seek independent legal advice where appropriate, particularly before entering into any settlement agreement.
I offer in-person mediation in Dublin, Kildare and the Midlands, as well as online mediation throughout Ireland.
Depending on the circumstances, sessions can take place with everyone together or through separate discussions where appropriate.
We'll agree on the most suitable arrangements before mediation begins.
A short call to talk through your situation, answer your questions and decide whether mediation is right for you. No obligation.
